Located in the heart of the modern city center Taksim, the museum's location is perfect for a stroll in the city's latest quarter. Taksim is the center of the European lifestyle starting from the late 19th century. The first name of the place was Pera. The meaning is another side; this name was given for the area's location on the other side of Golden Horn compared to the old city center. The first actual settlement of the area goes back to the 16th century. This was a palace for a prince having Venetian descent. Starting from then on, the area started having a key role in the relations between the Ottomans and the European countries. As a result, the area became an area where you could see European music, lifestyle, food and architecture.
The building that hosts the Museum is the Grand Pera shopping mall in Istiklal Street. In history, the building has an important place. Abraham Pasha ordered it, a diplomat having a vital role in the Ottoman Empire's affairs and the countries in Europe as a personal house. The old name of the building was Cercle d'Orient. The architect of the building was famous in the late 19th century, Alexandre Vallaury. After it was open, it was one of the biggest buildings in Istiklal Street. Over time, many different companies and shops served in the building, but the building's importance never changed. After a fire in 1983, the building needed an extensive renovation. In the year 2006, the renovation started and the building was opened one more time with the name The Grand Pera.
